From a Nobody to a Pilot
My last flight to Mumbai was a turning point in my life. No, not because it was hijacked or had an unexpected passenger hiding in the plane’s toilet, but because of my co-passenger, who was sitting beside me.
He was around 35 years, well built and one of the few people in the world who have ever challenged me vertically (well I am 6 feet 3 inches tall)! He claimed to have six packs, not of abs, but of kaju and badam and like yours truly, was very talkative. But what set him apart was the fact that he flew metallic birds and was a pilot with a renowned airline carrier.
With me always being in awe of planes and pilots, we hit off very well. We chatted throughout the journey about his job, his experiences and the thrill one gets from flying. Some more interaction told me that he was a byproduct of Chimes Aviation Academy (www.caaindia.com), which is one of the best pilot training academies in India.
Not divulging much into his bio-data, I managed to convince him to show me the cock pit, though it required a lot of persistence. But the marketer in me finally got the better of him. Once I entered the cock pit, I didn’t feel like getting out. It was an amazing experience. Two uniformed men sat there, with micro phones on and having access to so many different buttons. In my short life, I have managed to see many control rooms, but this was a different room altogether. Seeing the clouds right in front of you and guiding the plane like a spaceship was surely an experience which cannot be described in words.
The entire journey made me rethink my career path. From being among the lakhs of MBA aspirants following the herd, now I wanted to be among the few adventurers and become a pilot. With some more research, and a brief yet encouraging interaction with my pilot friend I found out that famed actor Kunal Kapoor was also a student at Chimes Aviation Academy. This motivated me further to join my co-passenger’s alma mater at Dhana in Madhya Pradesh.

Not only did I get my first session in flying, but also saw Jyoti Randhawa, the Indian Tiger Woods from close quarters (though I hope that our Tiger is tiger in only one sport). But then who followed him … any guesses? Chitrangda Singh, the Bollywood actor. Boy! She is beautiful, much prettier than what I saw on the idiot box. Apparently they both are constant visitors at Chimes Aviation Academy for sky diving.
In the next few days, I laid my hands on the ultimate flying machine, the Cessna 172. Though I had goose bumps initially, but then it was a smooth transition from land to air. The entire process was like flying to Pandora on an exploration of a whole new world. No wonder, Madam President was so eager to fly in the Indian skies.
Coming to the present, I have finished my training and obtained my Commercial Pilot License. My entire stay at Chimes Aviation Academy has been one of great learnings. CPL Start-up course at Chimes Aviation Academy (CAA) first of its kind preliminary pilot training course aimed at young aspirants who would want to understand nuances of being a pilot training in a practical scenario. Aim of this course is to enable aspiring pilots to test their aptitude for being a pilot & become eligible to appear for CPL (Commercial Pilot license) examination.
Educational Qualification - You can join this course at CAA while studying in class X or above. However for grant of CPL license eligibility is Class XII with Physics & Math’s
Medical Basic - health fitness, for regular CPL course Class II is mandatory and for grant of CPL license Class I is mandatory.
Age - 16 years and above
(Please note for grant for CPL license you should be 18 years old on date of issue of license)
Other - Adequate competency in English Language
Aviation Qualification - NIL

Curriculum Overview
• Complete Ground Training to facilitate issue of a Student Pilot License (SPL). This would include SPL exam, which would be conducted at CAA at Dhana. Ground studies would also include preparatory notes which would help you for your PPL (Private Pilot License)/CPL written exams
• 15 hours of dual flying on brand new Cessna 172 equipped with Garmin 1000 Glass cockpit Glass Cockpit training on PC based simulator
• Glass Cockpit training on PC based simulator
• Course books for SPL & flying kit
• Facilitation in obtaining Computer number from DGCA
• Class I & Class II Medical facilitation
• Access to CAA library during the course duration

Course Detail Summary
Please note this is part of the CPL course. Anybody who applies only for a multi engine TR/IR, the course details are as follows:
In the Multi-engine Rating Course at Chimes Aviation Academy you would be given the Type Rating (TR) and Instrument Rating (IR) on a twin engine aircraft.
The course curriculum covers airline oriented training in which you learn to fly the airway routes (like the airlines fly), doing instrument approaches and handling simulated emergencies like engine and other system failures. We would also give you adequate ground training to pass the
DGCA 'Technical-Specific' written examination on the Piper Seneca IV aircraft.
Notwithstanding the shortage of pilots in India, most of the airlines prefer to recruit CPL holders who have a multi-engine rating.
It is our firm belief that armed with a multi-engine rating; you would have a clear advantage over single engine CPL holders in securing a job with an airline.

Rolling in Dismay!
Frustrated with Air India, Rima who has been working as an air hostess with the company since 1979 lodged a suit in the court against the company. Apparently a rather trivial mistake or to elaborate she rolling up her uniform sleeves cost her 2 promotions and backwages to the tune of Rs. 60 lakh!
Claiming that her employer National Aviation Company of India Limited (NACIL) is doling out too heavy a punishment for a minor mistake, she filed the complaint and demanded that she be paid what is rightfully due to her.
Another slugfest to begin as the war between the air hostess and her employer takes-off!

Mile High Club!
Throughout the ages godmen have had their share of scandals and fiascoes.. However when the Indian police began investigating one such self-proclaimed godman (saint) they stumbled upon a huge network that connected the ground and the skies.
According to the most recent reports the Indian police unraveled a $10 million high-end prostitution racket that comprises more than 200 women from students to a air stewardesses including some from British Airways that was being run by the godman!
This high profile prostitution racket has blown sky high and as the police get more involved the case is going to get murkier. Wonder if it was the cutbacks in salary of aviation staff all over that forced the women to adopt this get-rich-quick scheme..!?

Horror and Tragedy..
Yesterday turned out to be a tragic day for the the Indian Navy Air Force. Performing in the International Aviation exhibition in Hyderabad, 4 IAF jet trainer Kiran mk-II's were performing an acrobatic maneuver in the skies when one plane could not gain altitude after a dip.
Much to the dismay of the bystanders and others, this plane lost altitude and crashed into a residential building killing both the pilots as well as a civilian. The Sagar Pawan acrobatic team lost 2 of its most brilliant pilots in this tragedy. A probe has been ordered into the incident and all the planes of this category have been grounded.
Current reports state that the aging aircraft was probably the primary reason for the accident. If so then we need a massive overhaul of all our aircrafts.

Shame on You!
In a blatant disregard of morality, ethical code of conduct and the law, a 54 year old ground staff along with another personnel of Air India molested a 9 year old girl.
The mother of the young girl had apparently asked the staffer to escort the girl to the lounge while she was handling the airport formalities. Caught in the act on CCTV the molester was arrested although let off shortly after a mere 1000 INR fine!
Air India has suspended him along with another staff member...but my question is shouldn't he be thrown in jail to rot for eternity??!!

Trippy Shoes!
Talk about Trippy shoes!
Recently a 23 year old passenger flying to Hong Kong via India and Bangladesh was caught at the international airport at Hong Kong for possession of contraband elements. The police found 1,00,000 HK$ worth Cannabis Resin inside his shoes!
Soon to face punishment for breach of law, this overseas visitor would not be in high spirits anymore!
